Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed. I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the level; then hail will sweep away the refuge of lies and the waters will overflow the secret place.” Isaiah 28:16-17 NASB

Evil strongholds (like sexual addiction) are built on foundations of lies. When we succumb to temptations, we give the lies that they are based on places of refuge in our hearts. When we continue to sin in a particular area, the refuge is reinforced and hardened by the deceitfulness of our sin (Hebrews 3:13). It can become a “stronghold” and in such a state it becomes more and more difficult for us to see the truth about our situation.

God desires that we don’t give lies refuge in our hearts. He desires truth in every part of us (Psalm 51:6).  God’s Holy Spirit is also known as the Spirit of Truth, who will guide us in all truth (John 16:13).

When we place our trust and faith in Jesus (the “costly cornerstone”) he becomes our new foundation for life. He then will help us identify and sweep away any refuge of lies we have allowed in our hearts. He will flood our hearts with living water that will cleanse the inner places of our hearts.

Questions for further thought:
Are there some lies that you have allowed a place of refuge in your heart?
What is the truth about those lies?
What are the sources of truth that God has given us to help us discern between truth and lies? (John 14:16-17, 26; Hebrews 4:12)

Prayer:
“Lord Jesus, I believe in you and trust in you as my cornerstone. Thank you for making the costly sacrifice for my sin. I confess that I’ve allowed these lies to find refuge in my heart: __________ (list as appropriate). I see the truth about these lies and I desire to remove any refuge I’ve given them. Please wash away the refuge of lies in me and cleanse me with your living water in the secret places of my heart. Please sharpen my conviction of truth and strengthen me to live for you. Thank you, Lord Jesus! I praise you now and forever, Amen.”
